Crying in your car,
Praying for the girl that filled your life,
Ah, life is such a fragile wing that keeps us,
In the air from falling, falling down.
It’s all that you can do,
And so you keep it all inside a song,
But songs are only fragile wings that keep us,
In the air from falling, falling down.
Oh, draw yourself a sky and fly above it,
Paint yourself a deeper blue and try,
To let it slip away – let it slip away.
Crying in your car,
Praying for the girl that filled your life,
Ah, life is such a fragile wing that keeps us,
In the air from falling, falling down.
It keeps us in the air,
Keeps us in the air,
Keeps us in the air.

Opening Doors

I was thinking of taking a drive,
Back to the house where I was born,
Where I was born.
I keep seeing myself on our porch,
Looking thru blinds that we kept closed,
All the time.
Opening doors – letting in air,
Finding a place for everything there,
Opening doors – letting in light,
Patching the holes – making things right,
Making things right.
I imagine I’m swimming the lake,
Where we would stay when we were young,
Before it changed.
I’m walking through the cabin that burned,
Looking for keys that I might turn,
That I might turn.
Opening doors – letting in air,
Finding a place for everything there,
Opening doors – letting in light,
Patching the holes – making things right,
Making things right.
I keep dreaming I’ve found another room,
One that I’ve never seen before,
I don’t know why.
I was hoping that you’d find it, too,
So I could play you all the songs,
I wrote for you.
Opening doors – letting in air,
Finding a place for everything there,
Opening doors – letting in light,
Patching the holes – making things right,
Making things right.

Welcome To The City

Two dollar tips and the lipstick cigarettes
Get yourself a job with your fingertips
Too many tickets for the backseat matinee
Two hours later and you’re looking for another face
Don’t ask for love
Don’t ask for pity
Don’t ask for me
Welcome to the city
Four hundred dollars bus a room in the city
With a whole lot of people and a hole in the ceiling
Freeze in the winter, die in the summer
Seventeen kids next door without a mother
Hey, if you see me coming up the stairs
Please don’t confuse me with someone who cares
Welcome to the city…I’m glad you made it, baby
I’m really…
You got some letter, it’s a recommendation
Your best friend’s ex sent a copy to the station
And he knows some agent through a distant relation
An inside connection with a map and directions
Ah, too bad you came
Too bad you waited
Too bad for you
You’re over-educated
Welcome to the city…I’m glad you made it, baby
I’m really glad
Don’t ask for love
Don’t ask for pity
Don’t ask for me
Welcome to the city

It Don’t Move Me

The kids are hungry
And they line up and down the street
Just to catch a glimpse
Of the miracle of the week
But I knew there was something wrong
When the king had nothing on
You say that it feels right
You say that it fits tight
You say that it moves light
But it don’t move me
You say that it’s in time
You say that it feels fine
You say that it moves
But it don’t move me-
Excuse me baby,
But I just can’t catch the thrill
Of watching some joker
On the big screen make the kill
I’m sorry if it breaks your heart
But it don’t tear me apart
You say that it feels right
You say that it fits tight
You say that it moves light
But it don’t move me
You say that it’s in time
You say that it feels fine
You say that it moves
But it don’t move me-
Everybody needs a new thrill a day
And you know somebody’s gonna sell it
But when the screams die down
And the dreams leave town
You’re alone – you’re all alone

Rise Above

I sat on the edge of my grandmother’s bed and I combed her hair,
While the mother of Jesus looked on from a five-and-dime frame,
The three of us waited, the light outside faded, the moon came up,
While Grandmother dreamed up her wings to rise above.
She said…
Love isn’t having the things that we want,
It’s wanting the things we have.
Life is deciding whether we cry or laugh,
Oh, remember you’re part of the moon and the stars,
A part of those you love, oh, hold on to these things,
They’re your wings to rise above.
A doctor in Texas wakes up again scared and he don’t know why,
His life is a tangle of suture, money, and blood,
He says, “I touch without feeling, I fix without healing, I do not cry,
I can’t find the will or the way to rise above.
Love isn’t having the things that we want,
It’s wanting the things we have.
Life is deciding whether we cry or laugh,
Oh, remember you’re part of the moon and the stars,
A part of those you love, oh, hold on to these things,
They’re your wings to rise above.

Williams Avenue

On the North side of town
Where that blood-red moon is goin’ down
And all the stars are right on cue
High on Williams Avenue
Hallelujah, Friday’s here
The week is long for the insincere
The wine is red and the song is blue
High on Williams Avenue
High on Williams Avenue
High, high, high on Williams Avenue (yeah!)
I’m a stranger
I know it’s true
But I was hoping
That you just might change the rules
I said it feels I’m in the Portland Zoo
High on Williams Avenue
Let me ride your Cadillac
I don’t care when I when I get back
At least I’ll say
That I once knew
High on Williams Avenue
High on Williams Avenue
High, high, high on Williams Avenue (yeah!)
Me and love are more than ready
For that blood-red moon to shine
And your autumn air is heady
Come and take me for a ride
Hallelujah, Friday’s here
The week is long for the insincere
The wine is red and the song is blue
High on Williams Avenue
High on Williams Avenue
High, high, high on Williams Avenue (yeah!)

Caught In The Rain

In the eye of the storm you found me
I was caught in the rain like you
And it pulled us down together
And it tangled us in blue
Oh, all of my life
I wanted that night
Together and still it remains
I still hear the rain
I can’t get it out of my heart
And I will wait for you forever
No matter what you do or say
I’ll wait for you forever
‘Cause I’m still caught in the rain
They say the eye of the storm is quiet
And that’s where I’ll wait for you
They say dreams can show us answers
Oh, baby, I hope that’s true
‘Cause night after night
I dream of a light
That shows me, back through the rain
I find you again
I can’t get it out of my heart
And I will wait for you forever
No matter what you do or say
I’ll wait for you forever
‘Cause I’m still caught in the rain
Oh, all of my life
I wanted that night
Together and still it remains
I still hear the rain
I can’t get it out of my heart
And I will wait for you forever
No matter what you do or say
I’ll wait for you forever
‘Cause I’m still caught in the rain

Try To Make It True

Look in my eyes and you’ll find
That I’m really gonna try this time
I know that love has hurt before
But I swear I’m gonna give a little more
Babe, I’m gonna try (Try!)
Try! (Try!)
Try to make it true
Yes, I’m gonna try (Try!)
Try to make it true
Just look at our friends fall apart
It’s easy these days to lose heart
So hold me close like you do
And believe me when I say to you
Babe, I’m gonna try (Try!)
Try! (Try!)
Try to make it true
Yes, I’m gonna try (Try!)
Try to make it true
It so easy to slide
When your love is away
Everybody begs you to choose
The ways to keep you safe
So much of this world seems unreal
I can touch it but it has no feel
It’s up to me, it’s up to you
Seems to me it’s the least we can do
Babe, we’ve gotta try (Try!)
Try (Try!)
Try to make it true
Yes, we’ve gotta try (Try!)
Try to make it true
Try to make it true
Try to make it true
Try to make it true
Try to make it true
Try to make it, try to make it true
Try to make it, try to make it true
Try to make it true
Try to make it true
Try to make it true
Try to make it true
Try to make it
Try to make it
Try to make it
Try to make it, make it true

Harden My Heart

Cryin’ on the corner, waitin’ in the rain
I swear I’ll never, ever wait again
You gave me your word, but words for you are lies
Darlin’, in my wildest dreams, I never thought I’d go
But it’s time to let you know
I’m gonna harden my heart
I’m gonna swallow my tears
I’m gonna turn and leave you here
All of my life, I’ve been waitin’ in the rain
I’ve been waitin’ for a feeling that never, ever came
It feels so close but always disappears
Darlin’, in your wildest dreams, you never had a clue
But it’s time you got the news
I’m gonna harden my heart
I’m gonna swallow my tears
I’m gonna turn and leave you here
Darlin’, in my wildest dreams, I never thought I’d go
But it’s time to let you know
I’m gonna harden my heart
I’m gonna swallow my tears
I’m gonna turn and leave you here
I’m a-gonna harden my heart
I’m gonna swallow my tears
I’m a-gonna harden my heart
I’m gonna swallow my tears
Harden my heart
I’m gonna swallow my tears
No, oh, oh, oh
Harden my heart
I’m gonna harden my heart
I’m gonna swallow my tears
I’m a-gonna harden my heart

This Business Of Music

([Megan:] Mr. Jones will see you)
So, how ya’ been? I got your package,
Was gonna call – but it’s been wacky,
I love the stuff – it’s all amazing,
I plan to check it out after my vacation.
([Megan:] After his vacation)
Now, about your songs… you might consider,
Is there a way to make them bigger?,
Just a thought – but would you ever,
Let me find someone to help you make ’em even better?
Well, I don’t wanna drag this out,
I think were moving in the right direction now,
I’ll have Megan show you out,
Feel free to call me anytime.
Oh, I forgot – I meant to tell you,
Your last deal – I guess it fell through,
Don’t take it wrong – we dig your vision,
I’m hope you understand this wasn’t my decision,
([Megan:] It’s never his decision)
Hey, have you heard of Milo d’Venus?
The kid’s a freak – a friggin’ genius,
Just sixteen – totally new,
Now that the kind of thing,
We think that you could do.
Well, I don’t wanna drag this out,
I think were moving in the right direction now,
I’ll have Megan show you out,
Feel free to call me anytime.
Oh, before you go I wanted to show you,
My new home in Barcelona,
I took this picture – I love the light there,
My son’s a pilot – we always get a great fare.
([Megan:] Always gets a great fare)
I’m glad you came – I hope this helps,
I’m always here or somewhere else,
And don’t worry – I got your back, Babe,
I’m your man, Babe – just relax.
Well, I don’t wanna drag this out,
I think were moving in the right direction now,
I’ll have Megan show you out,
Feel free to call me anytime.

Crazy Quilt

I’ve been walking in the mornings,
With my worried friend,
And she’s been working on this crazy quilt,
For months on end,
And she’s fighting with the colors and the stitches,
And the batting and the backing,
And the chemo in her hands,
And she’s piecing it together the best that she can.
And these quilts that she’s made,
They cover all her walls,
She’s run out of places to put them,
And she says, What do I do? What do I do with them all?
I don’t know who I am.
And she’s piecing it together the best that she can,
And she’s piecing it together the best that she can.
And it’s all we know,
So we sing and sew the best that we can.
Just keep walking, keep on talking up and down these hills,
Just keep singing, keep believing in this crazy quilt.
I’ve been walking in the mornings,
With my worried friend,
And I’ve been working on these crazy songs,
For months on end,
And I’m fighting with the meaning and the meter,
And the voicings and the choices in my hands,
And I’m piecing it together the best that I can.
